Happy birthday to
my mother—the first year without her.
I would have loved
to bake her a lemon cake, to take her on a picnic next to little “Bean Creek”
at Bandelier with green chili bagels and smoked salmon, to enjoy her wry humor
over some Johnny Walker Black Label in the patio, under the linden.
How dearly I miss
being able to do any of those things.
